Your first fishing trip to Tromsø: flights, transfer, what to bring
5 min read

A first sea fishing trip to Northern Norway raises the same questions every time. How do I get there, what do I pack, who drives the boat. This guide answers them for Vikran, our camp on the Rystraumen strait, 30 km from Tromsø airport. Rules checked on 05.10.2026.
Flights to Tromsø
The airport is called Tromsø Airport and is run by Avinor. Avinor lists 17 airlines on its page, among them British Airways, easyJet, Iberia, SAS, Vueling, Wizz Air, Norwegian, Air France, Austrian Airlines, Danish Air Transport, Edelweiss Air and Eurowings. Source: Avinor
Which airline flies direct from your city changes with the season. We do not list routes here, because timetables move every year. Check current routes with Avinor on the page above, then confirm on the airline's own timetable. Book the flight to land before 17:00 if you can. Check-in at the apartments starts at 17:00. If you land later, the keys wait inside the apartment, so a late arrival works too.
From the airport to Vikran
The lodge is about 30 km from the airport. By car you take the E8 south, then Fv858 towards Vikran through the Ryatunnelen, about 35 minutes. Find the directions and the bus option on the contact page.
We run transfers for groups of 1 to 16 people. Book yours in advance and we meet you at the airport. The pickup works like this.
- Write to us on WhatsApp three times: the day before you fly, just before you board, and once you have landed.
- The driver waits at the petrol station about 200 metres from the arrivals exit.
- When you tell us you have your luggage, the driver pulls into the car park. That is usually about 45 minutes after landing.
- If we hear nothing, the driver leaves 1 hour 15 minutes after your scheduled arrival, and a new transfer is charged separately. One short message saves that.
Every transfer includes one shopping stop of up to 30 minutes. Send us your list and we can also shop before you arrive. Transfer and shopping prices are on the price list.
What to bring
Less than you think. The lodge lends or rents most of what you need on the water.
- Warm layers and a windproof shell. The sea stays cold even in July.
- Gloves and a hat, also in summer.
- A photo ID for the boat rental, and your boating licence if you need one (see below).
- A phone with a camera, and a charger.
- Clothes for the kitchen and the terrace, and for the laundry room if you want to wash your fishing clothes.
You can leave the rod tubes at home. Rods, reels and flotation suits are rented at the lodge, and life jackets are lent free of charge. Everyone on board wears a life jacket or flotation suit. We strongly recommend the suit, because it keeps you warm as well as afloat. The price list shows the daily rates.
The units are self-catering, and the kitchens have a cooktop, fridge, microwave and dishwasher, but no oven. Wi-Fi and parking are free. Breakfast can be added when you book.
On the territory there is a fish house where you clean and cut your catch, and drying for flotation suits. For taking fish home, read the export rules and bringing fish home before you pack.
If you fly in September or later, take a camera for the sky. Northern lights may be visible from late August to early April, if the sky is clear and dark. Source: Visit Tromsø
The boat licence rule
Anyone born on 1 January 1980 or later who operates a boat with more than 25 hp, or longer than 8 metres, needs a boating licence. Both of our boats have engines above 25 hp, so a guest born in 1980 or later needs a licence to drive. Source: Sjøfartsdirektoratet
A licence from another EEA country is valid according to its content. An ICC must include coastal navigation. Other foreign licences count if they meet the Norwegian requirements in all material respects and are issued in a Scandinavian language or English. Whether a UK licence is accepted: ask Sjøfartsdirektoratet before you travel. Source: Sjøfartsdirektoratet
Only the person who signs the rental agreement may drive, so put the agreement in the name of the group member who holds the licence. The details of both boats are on the boats page, and a longer comparison is in our two boats.
Day one checklist
- Check in from 17:00. The minimum stay is two nights.
- Take your photo ID and licence to the boat handover.
- Sign the rental agreement. We photograph the boat and engine with you.
- Leave the deposit. Fuel is paid separately, by the litre.
- Sit through the technical and safety briefing. Ask where the spots are and how the stream runs.
- Put on your life jacket or flotation suit, and switch on the GPS.
- Tell us your route and when you expect to be back.
- Remember that boats stay in when the wind goes above 10 metres per second.
- After the trip, tell us what you landed and released. We report every catch daily.
Your first week can be planned around the seasons on the fishing page. If you want to know what a few days here look like, see a week at Vikran. The lodge itself is on the stay page.
